Aeroplan answers your questions

We’ve received  a lot of questions over the past few days and wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of the most common questions about how to get the most from your Aeroplan membership.

Aeroplan is growing  – what does this mean for my ability to get the flights I want?

Great news – as an Aeroplan Member you have access to more seats than ever before!

Not only do you have access to our ClassicFlight rewards but now with our new Market Fare Flight Rewards, if there is a seat on the plane – it will be available to you.

In fact, Aeroplan puts more people in more reward seats than any other loyalty program in Canada.

In 2014, approximately 2.7 million rewards were issued to members including 1.9 million flights on Air Canada and Star Alliance carriers.

How come when I check for specific flights, often times, there is no availability?

Increasing availability and ensuring members have access to the seats they’re looking for is always a top priority for Aeroplan.

To help members get the flights they want we have launched a number of enhancements to the Aeroplan program to get you where you want to go faster. These include:

  • Market Fare Flight Rewards, which give Aeroplan Members access to any available seat on the plane at a rate that reflects market fares at the time of booking. Even better, Distinction members enjoy reductions of up to 35% on every seat, every day.
  • The enhanced search engine on provides full access to Air Canada and Star Alliance partner airlines – giving you a world of choice.
  • The Last-Minute Travel Tool,  which highlights destinations with great availability.
  • One-Way flight rewards, which are now available at half the miles required for a round-trip.

We recently announced that Aeroplan Members can now use their miles for the Premium Economy cabin on applicable Air Canada flights when booking both ClassicFlight and Market Fare Flight Rewards.

What’s the difference between ClassicFlight Rewards and Market Fare Flight Rewards?

To offer members the most options for their travel rewards, Aeroplan has two types of flight rewards.

Classic Flight rewards, which offer industry-leading value at a fixed mileage level.  ClassicFlight Reward seats are limited and are subject to the airline’s control).

If members do not find a ClassicFlight Reward option that meets their needs, Market Fare Flight Rewards, provide Aeroplan Members with access to any available seat on Air Canada at competitive mileage levels that vary based on market fares. Even better, Distinction members enjoy reductions of up to 35% on every seat, every day.

Why do I have to pay for Carrier Surcharges and why are they different than if you pay for an Air Canada flight?

Aeroplan does not determine the carrier surcharge, the amount is determined by each airline carrier individually and varies based on their own costs, destination, cabin etc.

All major loyalty programs in Canada are required to collect carrier-imposed surcharges.  Aeroplan only applies these surcharges where applicable on behalf of its partner Air Canada. 100 per cent of the surcharges applied are passed directly to Air Canada for settlement with the applicable airlines and Aeroplan only applies the surcharge for carriers that already apply the surcharge to their own frequent flyer program tickets.

Similar to all other loyalty programs in Canada, the carrier surcharge for all Aeroplan Flight Rewards (ClassicFlight and Market Fare Flight Reward) on International itineraries is the same as the surcharge Air Canada collects on all of their revenue tickets purchased by customers.

Air Canada applies a carrier surcharge as a separate amount for ClassicFlight Rewards on North American itineraries and has done so since 2004.

Carrier surcharge for Market Fare Flight Rewards on North America is the same as the surcharge Air Canada collects on all of their tickets purchased by customers. Because Aeroplan Market Fare Flight Rewards are derived from Air Canada’s base fares at time of booking, the conversion of these fares into variable mileage levels includes the carrier surcharges.

I’m saving up for a special trip…how can I earn miles really quickly?

With more than 75 partners, it is easier than ever before to take that dream vacation.

Here are a few easy tips to help you maximize your Aeroplan Miles earn:

  1. Consolidate your spending on one credit card to maximize your earning power.  And when you’re carrying an Aeroplan co-branded card, always make sure you swipe your Aeroplan membership card to earn miles twice on the same purchase.
  2. Carry your loyalty card.  Make sure to give your Aeroplan number or swipe your card when you rent a car or book your stay with participating hotel partners or shop at a retail outlet.
  3. A great way to earn miles faster is to take advantage of special partner promotions to earn thousands of extra bonus miles. Check the promotions page at
  4. Shop online!  The Aeroplan eStore  features over 100 retailers such as Apple Store Canada,,, and  Members can shop online and earn at least 1 Aeroplan Mile for every $1 that they spend and double that if they pay with one of the Aeroplan affiliated financial card. Visit:  for more details.  Aeroplan also has a great partnership with SHOP.CA where members can earn 1 Aeroplan Mile for every $1 spent and Distinction members will earn 2 Aeroplan Miles for every $1 spent on all purchases made at SHOP.CA.

Does Aeroplan have an expiry policy?

Aeroplan cancelled its seven-year mileage redemption policy, effective June 27, 2013.

As an active Aeroplan member your miles will never expire if you’re active at least once a year in the program – either earning or redeeming miles.

In other words, members must have one qualifying activity by either earning or using their miles (redemption, donation, sharing, or transferring) within a 12-month period to ensure their account stays active. It’s as simple as gassing up your car at Esso, staying at one of our partner hotels, or even donating miles through Aeroplan Beyond Miles program.

How do we contact Areoplan when we need help to change a flight. Your phone system is always jamed and most numbers do not work. I was in Las Vegas last week, and tried for 3 days to change my flight but couldn’t get through. I am I doing something wrong? What is the solution in future?
