Last year, newlyweds Matthew and Gina did more than honeymoon for a month; they went on a veritable adventure. Booking multi-city stops with Aeroplan, they were able to visit both Thailand and Australia, checking off several bucket-list items.

Where you travelled: We visited Bangkok, Khao Lak, Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Sydney, the Gold Coast, and Cairns.

Why that trip was special: It was our honeymoon! Gina and I had been dating for five years before I proposed. Travel has always been a huge part of our lives, especially since we met in Cuba, while we were in in university.

The memory you cherish most: In Thailand, we had the opportunity to visit an elephant sanctuary. Part of the experience was to play with these gentle giants in the River Kwai. They’d lift you up with their trunks and throw you into the water. It had us laughing like we’ve never laughed before. We also hired an underwater videographer to film us while diving the Great Barrier Reef, our favourite site on the trip.

Your favourite meal on the trip and why: In the Phi Phi Islands, we simply couldn’t get enough of the banana samosas. They’re super simple: just mashed bananas wrapped in a flaky pastry dough, drizzled with sweet chili sauce. We still talk about them to this day!

When your friends go to Thailand, you always recommend: Looking for places off the beaten path to escape the tourist hustle, like Koh Lanta Island. In Phuket, we stayed at a hotel named “The Nap,” which was a 10-minute walk from the main streets, and perfect for some peace and quiet. You should also experience the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, where vendors sell from their canoes, and the Taweechai Elephant Camp!

In general, how do you use Aeroplan to make your travel plans happen? Any tips or tricks? We typically get our miles through spending on Aeroplan-affiliated credit cards, and taking part in their ongoing promotions. What most people don’t realize is that Aeroplan allows multi-city stops at no extra miles! For example, it was 80,000 miles to go from Toronto to Sydney, but it’s the same 80,000 miles to stop in Thailand for two weeks before Sydney. Your best bet is to look up common routes using the Aeroplan website and plan accordingly. It also usually makes sense to save up your miles for the longer distance flights, which are typically more expensive.
