Things to do in Halifax

Updated April 2014

Halifax combines the lived-in feel of a small, historic city with the excitement of an oceanside playground where anything can happen. Thanks to its deep natural harbour, Halifax has been a busy trading post for hundreds of years, and visitors flock to “Hali” for the fun nightlife, fresh seafood and the beautiful scenery of the Maritimes. Today, Nova Scotia’s capital is the cultural and financial hub of Atlantic Canada. But it remains a come-as-you-are kind of place, where locals are notoriously friendly, and “reserved” is a bad word.

Aeroplan Members are pretty seasoned travelers.  We’ve asked them for their opinion when it comes to their top picks for where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. We’ve tallied all their votes and have been able to identify the best of Halifax, as voted by our Aeroplan Members.

Where to Stay

We’ve asked our Aeroplan Members which Aeroplan Partner Hotels they prefer to stay with when travelling to Halifax and they have made their voices heard. They have identified the top 10 hotels in Halifax.

Located in downtown Halifax, the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel overlooks the harbor and is connected via a skywalk to Casino Nova Scotia, art galleries, shopping districts and so much more. Revel at the spectacular views of Halifax Harbor from your room as you surf on the hotel’s wifi or as you dine at 44 North Restaurant. After a long day, rest on Mariott’s custom-designed ‘Revive Bed’ sheets for a restful slumber.  It’s no wonder our members choose the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel as the top hotel in Halifax.

Pressgang Oyster bar 2

Aeroplan Members LOVE oysters! The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar was voted as top restaurant in Halifax. With a selection of oysters from all over Atlantic Canada you are sure to want to come back and try their offerings from other regions.  Don’t be fooled though, The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar features more than just oysters; they offer a rich array of exquisite seafood, meat, game and poultry dishes.  Your taste buds will thank you for the food, and your eyes won’t stop surveying the historic stone work dating back to 1759 that lends itself to a truly unique dining experience. If you dove into the oysters and want to mix things up; try the Grilled Atlantic Beef Tenderloin. Served with chocolate coffee sauce, and topped with sautéed mushroom and grilled asparagus this dish is a unique and flavorful take on a classic meal.

What to DoHalifax_Citadel

With a knack for history, our members voted Citadel National Historic Site as the top place to see in Halifax. This 19th-century fort has sweeping views of downtown Halifax.  During the warmer months (May to October) the Citadel is thrown back in time as two historic regiments of the British Army – the pageantry of the 78th Highlanders and the precision of the Royal Artillery thrills visitors daily with live re-enactments. You can also stop by the Army Museum and take one of the many guided tours including the Ghost Tour.
