3 Lovely Day Trips from London

London_Blog2_1200x628[1]You can certainly choose to hit the pavement hard and hop on and off as many double-decker buses as you can to try and see every corner of London. But let’s face it, you may want to take a vacation from your vacation and see what the charming English countryside has to offer. Well it just so happens that we’ve prepared a short list of the top 3 day trips to take from London!

While many great things have come out of Oxford (like Oxford University graduates, the Oxford dictionary, and the Oxford comma) the town itself is a magnificent place to visit. The university is over 800 years old and its alumni include famous authors, philosophers and 26 British Prime Ministers – making it an absolute must-see destination for fans of history and literature. If you’re seeking a more modern-day sight, both young and old movie buffs will appreciate a tour of Christ College Church which featured heavily in the Harry Potter film series as the inspiration for Hogwarts Hall!

Also, check out the World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill and a simply stunning architectural achievement from the 18th century Baroque period. The palace is still occupied by the Dukes of Marlborough, but you can still take tours of certain parts of the interior, and explore over 2,000 acres of parks and gardens outdoors.

Sherwood Forest
You would be hard-pressed to find any child (or adult, for that matter) who doesn’t know about the adventures of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. Step into a living fairy tale when you visit the very real Sherwood Forest and neighbouring city of Nottingham. There are over 3,300 acres of beautiful woodlands where the legendary Robin Hood first met Maid Marian and hid from the tyrannical rule of Prince John.

In present-day, you can relive the folklore every August during the annual Robin Hood Festival. Rent a bike from the visitor centre to explore the forest paths and playgrounds, and you have a great family activity that transports you back to medieval times.

The Cotswolds
Imagine a quaint, picturesque scene of the English countryside with rolling hills, stone-built houses and herds of sheep grazing in their pastures. That’s exactly what the Cotswolds is—in addition to being the getaway destination of choice for celebrities like Kate Moss, Stella McCartney, and Hugh Grant. It’s such a gorgeous landscape that it’s officially been designated by the UK government as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

You can easily drive to the Cotswolds from London in less than 2 hours – renting a car from our partners at Avis or Hertz is a great way to earn even more Aeroplan miles on the go. Whether you visit one of the old-fashioned pubs or tour the historic homes from throughout the Middle Ages, you’re going to simply fall in love with this charming rural region of England.
There you have it, our best picks when it comes to taking a short day trip beyond the city limits of London. We hope you’ll be inspired to get out and add an adventure or two to your trip!

And by the way, if you are planning a trip to a neighbouring European city by June 30 and you haven’t book yet, make sure you register for the current Air Canada promotion and book your trip by May 25, 2016 in order to earn double miles on your round-trip.
