4 Ways to Find Your Paris

Paris can be many things to many people: a city of history, art, food, culture, museums, entertainment, romance, and lots more. But the most memorable way to experience Paris is to find your Paris. Here are four ways to make your Paris visit a personally unforgettable one.

Picnic like a Parisian

Let’s face it, sometimes we pack our vacation itineraries so full of “gotta-do’s” that we make ourselves as stressed and harried as in our normal lives back home. So when you’re in Paris, why not get a baguette from one of Paris’s finest bakeries like Arnaud Delmontel, Au Duc de la Chapelle or La Maison Kayser, a bottle of wine (wine is cheaper than water in Paris!) and some tasty French cheese, and have a leisurely picnic by the Seine? Find a spot along the river and just enjoy watching the pageant of Parisian life flow by.

Get lost: Discover your Paris on foot

Although Paris boasts one of the most inexpensive and efficient public transit systems anywhere, the best way to see Paris is on foot. It’s a very walkable city; you can go from one end of the city to the other in only a few hours. Get blissfully lost wandering the beautiful streets. You may just discover your new favourite café or a charming park hidden away where you least expect it.

If you need a plan, one of the great ways to see the city on foot is to walk from the Arc de Triomphe in the west to Notre-Dame in the east. Over the course of a couple of hours you’ll see many of Paris’s most famous places and landmarks, including, of course, the aforementioned Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées, as well as the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais, Place de la Concorde, the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d’Orsay, the Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre, the Pont-Neuf, the Latin Quarter and Notre-Dame Cathedral. But if wandering footloose is not your thing, there are also many guided walking tours that you can book through your hotel.

Experience the Paris nightlife

Paris is beautiful at night, and part of that beauty is found in experiencing the city’s famous nightlife and all that it has to offer. With such a variety of nightclubs, bars and music venues, you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy.

If you love dancing, you’ve come to the right place. Paris has some of Europe’s hottest nightclubs. It’s no coincidence that the French invented the word discothèque. Grab a partner and dance the night away at Queen, Chez Raspoutine or L’Arc (near the Arc de Triomphe and designed by Lenny Kravitz).

Cabaret shows are more traditional, and you’ll find mostly other tourists there, but the most famous ones are legendary establishments—the Moulin Rouge, the Lido and Crazy Horse Paris—that provide entertainment, usually of an adult variety, with singers and dancers or burlesque entertainers. They fill up quickly, so you might want to book in advance.

Meet real Parisians

To best experience a place, it’s always valuable to get guidance and insider tips from the locals. Fortunately, there are several services in Paris that can connect you with real Parisians for just that purpose.

Paris with a Parisian is a service started by a group of locals in 2010 that offers 90-minute walking tours. The local guides don’t just point out the various city landmarks, they also recount stories and anecdotes that go with them. It’s a great way for visitors to get more engaged with life in Paris as seen by the people who call the city home. Another great service is Anto’s Paris. They offer guided bike rides around the city using the public bike system, Vélib’, and also organize nights out on the town, so you can discover the nightlife with a Parisian. They share insider information about local events and festivals, where to shop, the best places to eat or drink—the kinds of places that locals like to keep to themselves.
